It would appear some poor soul left a bid of 1200 pounds, but lost them; the dogs sold for 1220.
Can you imagine a 20 pound increment at that level?

Pair of Lincoln and Wellington on horseback

I was absolutely thrilled to hear from Louise Stevenson with the answer to my problem, about why Abraham Lincoln was paired by the mid Victorian potters with the Duke of Wellington.

Louise is an expert on the world of Uncle Tom and spoke to the Staffordshire Figure Association several years ago on the subject of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Uncle Tom; it was fascinating stuff.

The Illustrated London News was an important source for the potters and many, many moulds were based on the newspaper prints. For years we wondered why Garibaldi was paired with William Shakespeare as they lived centuries apart but it seems that Garibaldi visited England just about the time of Shakespeare's 300th birthday, and surely in some issue of the News in 1864 the two pictures were juxtaposed. So, back to Lincoln and Wellington. The assassination of President Lincoln was much in the worldwide news in 1865, which happened to be the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo (1815), easily explaining why these famous men were paired up by the potters.

Most of you will really enjoy this article in today's New York Post. The movie
YOUNG VICTORIA has gotten great reviews in New York, and another from the Queen of Victoria collectors, Linda Sarna.

One of the most beautiful Victorian needlepoints I have ever seen, this Landseer dog was sold for more than $3000 at Christies in New York City in June 2009.
Obviously after Sir Edwin Landseer, who visited with the Royal Family for many summers during the 1850s and painted Victoria, her family and their animals, this dog is particularly famous for rescuing a child from drowning.
There are many Staffordshire figures called Rescue Dog and Child Saved, but the title of this similar painting was named, by the artist,
Distinguished Member of the Humane Society !

Today, April 8, at Bonhams in London the Tailor Toby Jug on the catalog cover fetched 36,000 pounds,

and a lovely pair of pearlware figures of Gretna Green and The New Marriage Act made 6000.
